4 Positive Self-Talk Exercises for Success and Happiness

Our conversation with ourselves forms our mindset and that’s why the positive self-talk exercises and activities that I am going to share with you in this post can prove out to be very helpful for your emotional health.

Believe it or not, our reality is created by what we think and all our thoughts are born out of the type of beliefs we hold in our subconscious mind, so when you became aware of what is usually going inside your mind and take control of it, you are in the process of changing the set of beliefs that are responsible for who you are today.

In one of my previous posts, I talked about the techniques to overcome low self-esteem in which one method was all about changing self-talks. In this post, I will take it a step further and share with you a few more methods that I use whenever I find myself thinking negatively.

Before working on your communication with yourself I want you to understand that it is perfectly normal to talk with yourself because every person in the world does that.

We all have that voice inside our head that keeps on commenting about everything that happens in our life and when you are not busy with something, this same voice will bring up the thoughts of past and future.

This running commentary is always there and you should not try too hard to stop it because the more you will resist it the more powerful it gets. What you can do is use meditational methods to take short breaks from this incessant mind chatter, mindfulness exercises have proven to be extremely helpful for silencing this voice inside their head for people to a great extent.

If meditation is not possible for you then you should somehow stop this mental chatter from being a negative one, positive self-talk activities that I am going to show you in this post will help you to shift your focus from negative thoughts to the positive ones. This way you can have a pleasant conversation with yourself which will not only improve your self-image but it will also make you a happier person.

Reminders

You might be strongly willing to change your thinking habits but since our mind is always too busy with the other things in our daily lives, it usually becomes very difficult to use such methods.

That’s why keeping reminders is a very important thing!

Before you start to practice the methods I am going to show you, I would advise you to set reminders at various places in your house. For this, you can use sticky notes that will remind you about these personal growth activities. Stick it in your bedroom, bathroom, lunch box, fridge, and all the places where you go frequently. You may not be feeling a need to do this, but it is the most important part of this process.

I hope that by now you have found ways to remind yourself about practicing these techniques, let’s talk about the exercises now.

1 – Ho’oponopono Process

There is a reason why I have put this particular exercise in the first place, this is something that has helped me a lot in my personal growth journey. This method when understood properly holds the power to transform the life of a person but it is very difficult to perform this technique because it makes you take complete responsibility for “everything” that happens in your life and there is no exception to that.

Actually, this is a process based on an ancient Hawaiian healing art and it works on your energy, this not only changes your inner state by energetically healing you but it also highly affects your external reality as well.

The best thing about this method is that it can be used in our day to day life issues, you don’t need to set a specific clock time for performing this process but you will use it whenever you feel heavy emotions during your day. Whenever the voice inside your head will talk negatively you can use this simple exercise to work at the root cause of such thought patterns.

It is not possible for me to explain this process in a few lines, so I have made a whole post on it which you can read here – The Updated Ho’oponopono and Dr. Joe Vitale’s Zero Limits

2 – Affirmations

Using positive affirmations is one very obvious method that can help you to think positively. Depending on your needs, you can choose any good affirmation and use it repeatedly throughout your day.

One of the biggest advantages of using affirmations is that it gives you an opportunity to change any particular negative belief into a positive one.

For doing this you need to be highly aware of your mental and emotional states (I recommend reading Eckhart Tolle’s Power of Now for learning more about present moment awareness) because with a proper degree of awareness you can catch yourself whenever you are having a lot of negative thoughts and immediately use an appropriate affirmation that lifts you up, doing this regularly will help you to change the particular belief that is causing such thoughts.

I call it the “instant belief changer”, at any moment when I feel negative emotions, I first work on identifying the beliefs causing those thoughts and feelings, then I use affirmations to change that particular subconscious belief.

I have explained it in more detail in the advanced law of attraction wealth manifestation exercises post, though I have demonstrated how to use it for the money purpose there, you can use it for any particular area of your life.

3 – Short Story

This is a method where you tell yourself a short self-created story which brings some very uplifting visuals to your imagination. You can use this during times when you know you are not feeling good or having too many negative thoughts.

It can be done in two ways:-

1 – Just like the previous method, when you find yourself thinking negatively about something, just stop yourself and instead of using an affirmation you can also prefer to tell yourself a story of the future where things happen according to your desire.

Once you become good at doing this you can save yourself from those worrying thoughts and create a better future by expecting good things to happen.

2 – The second way of doing this is also quite similar but here you will tell yourself a positive story that’s unrelated to what you have been already thinking.

It is not always possible to think positively about something that is not going well or if you are too negative about it, so in all such cases you should simply prefer avoiding such types of thoughts altogether.

In order to do that, you can tell yourself some positive story of the future which is related to any other area of your life. This will take your immediate focus from the unwarranted worries to something that will lighten your mood. Suppose you are having troublesome thoughts about your financial situation then instead of trying to fight those thoughts you can consciously decide to think about your family or loved ones, imagine a holiday with people you love and bring yourself into a joyful state by doing so.

If possible then write down that story in a notepad or your computer, writing the things that makes you feel joyful has a deeper impact than the mere act of surface-level thinking.

4 – Good Memories

One thing is true about all the people in the world, we are never at the same place in any specific area of our lives where we have been before. Some people may deny this, but there is always a small or big change that has occurred, you are either better than before or things might have gotten worse.

We all have memories that we cherish, there have been moments in our lives when the things that are bothering us right now did not use to exist. In truth, the external circumstances are not what is causing you the problem, your own desire to change things is the real culprit (and situations won’t change unless you let go the inner struggle).

Recalling past events is not something I would recommend you much but when you are not in the state to make any other above-mentioned methods work for you, this can be your last resort.

Many of us have those friends who keep reminding us of the good times by always saying things like “Hey, remember those days when we used to party every night”.. I am not asking you to become one of those people because this moment is the most precious one and you must realize that. However, when you are feeling negative, talking to yourself like those people about a past event can work very well to change your emotional state at that point.

Unlike the other exercises that I have illustrated in this article, do not make this one a habit. You must use this method very carefully otherwise you will start to live in the past.
