Lucid Dream without Sleep Paralysis – 7 Essential Tips

If you are trying to find out how to lucid dream without sleep paralysis, then you have reached the right place because I am going to share a few tips here that can help you.

One of the most feared lucid dream experiences is sleep paralysis and I am well aware that many people stop trying to lucid dream once it happens to them.

First of all, it is not at all necessary that you will have to face sleep paralysis only if you are into lucid dreaming, it can happen to anyone.

If in any way your sleep pattern is altered there is a possibility that you might experience this state, but obviously those who use various lucid dreaming techniques are more likely to experience it than others.

What Happens during Sleep Paralysis?

I am going to explain this to you in short simple words. See, sleep paralysis is actually a dream state which appears to be real because your mind is half awake and your body is completely asleep.

There is a biological mechanism which stops us from physically acting out when we are dreaming, but when the mind is partially awake you consciously experience this inability to move your body, so, as a result you find yourself awake in your bed paralyzed. However it is still a dream state because the mind is not completely awake, so you actually don’t have to worry much about it.

But I do understand that sleep paralysis is worse than nightmares, so I will definitely help you to avoid them.

It is a bit paradoxical that you want to have lucid dreams by avoiding sleep paralysis, because sleep paralysis itself is a lucid dream state and that’s why experienced lucid dreamers love it since it gives them a great opportunity to induce a lucid dream.

You can’t really avoid sleep paralysis completely if you are trying to have a lucid dream, but I do have some tips that can work to a great extent: –

1 – Don’t Change Your Sleep Timings

I don’t know if you are too busy or if your schedule varies everyday, but if you hate sleep paralysis then you have to fix a proper time to sleep and wake up, and follow it regularly.

2 – Have a Balanced Amount of Sleep Everyday

Sleeping too much or very less causes disruption in sleep cycles which can lead to sleep paralysis conditions few minutes before you wake up.

3 – Random Afternoon Naps

If you have a daily routine of short afternoon naps then it is okay, but if you sleep randomly anytime at the noon, especially after a heavy lunch then there is a high probability that you might experience sleep paralysis because during those times your mind is comparatively more active than usual.

4 – Eating Too Much

Avoid eating too much before your sleep hours. Eating too much makes your digestive system busy for a long time and this causes your mind to be more active when you are asleep.

If you have the habit of binge eating or eating at night after dinner, then also your regular sleep cycle is highly affected.

5 – Stress

As we have discussed throughout this post “active mind+ tired body = sleep paralyses”, so if your mind is restless due to your lifestyle or problems that you might be facing, then one of its side effects could be frequent sleep paralysis.

Try to find some good ways to relax your mind and rest will be naturally handled , I would suggest you to practice some simple mindfulness exercises for this purpose.

6 – Change of Place

Recently, I visited my friend’s home in a different city and during my stay at his place I had sleep paralysis continuously everyday for about a week.

Since sleep paralysis doesn’t bother me much because I use it to have lucid dreams, it wasn’t that troublesome to me, but it could scare the hell out of a beginner. So, if something like this happens to you than understand that this is happening because you are sleeping in a new place.

Just make sure to relax your mind a little before sleeping using some meditation or relaxation technique if this happens to you.

7 – Avoid Distractions

You must keep yourself away from anything that engages your mind before the sleep timings, it could be your mobile, laptop, T.V etc. stay away from all of them for about 30 minutes before you go to bed.
