What Is the Subconscious Mind and How It Works?
Have you ever wondered what the subconscious mind is? Is that an assumption based concept for psychological studies or does exist as a separate entity apart from our conscious mind?
There was a time when subconscious mind used to be a thing in psychology books and therapists were most interested in knowing how it works, but these days every person interested in self-growth is coming to know about it.
Despite reading a lot about the subconscious mind, I used to be a little confused about its exact definition because hypothetically we can discuss such stuff in detail but when someone desires to get a simple explanation of such complicated and hyped stuff, it becomes a bit difficult to come up with an answer that can satisfy them.
After doing a good research I consider myself prepared to answer this question to anyone who asks me about the inner mind (and I get such questions a lot), so here I will provide you an answer to it based on my understanding hoping that it will be helpful to you.
The Subconscious Mind – A Simple Explanation
Actually, there are no two different minds viz. the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, they are instead two different aspects of the same mind.
You have only one mind, but your mind possesses two distinctive characteristics. – Joseph Murphy, Author of “The Power of the Subconscious Mind“
Our mind is vast and amazing, but it has dual nature, so for the ease of understanding, we assume them as two different minds.
We are only aware of one particular task done by our mind at any moment whereas it handles infinite tasks.
You don’t have to consciously inhale oxygen to keep breathing nor you need to make sure that your heart is beating so that it keeps pumping blood, all the bodily actions happens automatically, doesn’t matter if you are awake or asleep.
Likewise, when you are driving a car, you are doing multiple tasks at a time – Controlling steering with one hand, changing gear from the another hand, one foot is on the clutch while the other is moving from the gas pedal to brakes. If you will observe closely, you will see that this happens automatically and you don’t really need to be conscious of all of these actions at once, sometimes your conscious mind is listening to a song or thinking of something else and yet you are driving well.
Here’s a little fact you must know – You cannot be conscious of more than one action at once because you cannot think two thoughts simultaneously, it is impossible, one thought follows the other!
So the subconscious mind is a term used to address all the tasks that our mind performs without our conscious involvement.
A Small Exercise to Know Your Mind
I am going to clear your confusion with a small exercise that you can do right now in order to understand the dual nature of your mind.
Here’s what you have to do –
1 – Bring both hands in front of you with your index fingers pointing out.
2- Look at your right hand’s index finger, now move it left and right drawing congruent lines, do it fast.
3- Keep doing that and meanwhile look at your left hand’s index finger and draw consecutive circles…fast!.. now, keep doing this and again look back at the right hand.
What happened? Did your right index finger stop when you tried to make circles with the left one? Was it difficult to make circles from the left hand while you were looking at the right one? (Do let me know in the comments section)
If you will do this honestly, you will realize that you cannot control them both at the same time, you have to program your mind to do at least one of these tasks correctly.
After few minutes you will see that you have practiced and become perfect in doing this, you can then even sing a song while you are still doing it correctly because you have programmed your mind, in psychological terms, we say, your subconscious mind is doing it.
That is how we learn all the skills, that is how we memorize things, that is how we create our habitual patterns and that is also how we have formed our identities/personalities.
Mind Is Everything
The mind that handles all the involuntary tasks in our lives is the subconscious mind and whatever it does is based on the information it has received through our life experiences with or without our conscious awareness.
Our subconscious mind is so powerful that it can make us achieve any goal we can think of. The only thing that is making any goal impossible for us to achieve are the types of beliefs that our inner mind received when we were growing up. But still, our inner mind is like a kid which sees things differently than our conscious mind.
It is true that our inner mind is responsible for who we are today but we can change it using our conscious intentions to get a different result in our lives then what we are getting now.
I believe that now you know about the workings of your subconscious mind, so all I want to tell you is to clear your limiting beliefs related to any particular area of your life and you will see yourself getting better at it.
I do this using energy block clearing techniques, and you too can choose anything that feels good to you, just remember that your mind is everything and it can make you anything!!
