How to Make Your Own Affirmations

In this post, I will be showing you how you can make your own affirmations and use them in the right way. If you know about the law of attraction then you will be well aware of the power of positive affirmations by now.

Our life is shaped by the beliefs that we hold deep in our inner mind and a repeated thought becomes a belief, this is why the law of attraction based affirmations are so powerful because when you repeat a statement over and over to yourself it stops being a mere surface-level thought and soon converts into a belief.

You can experiment this for yourself, start saying to yourself that you are becoming healthier repeatedly for a few days and you will see that you will gain a new confidence that your body has become healthier. Words are powerful, in hypnotherapy, suggestions are used to create major psychological as well as physical changes.

We all know when we say something hurtful to someone, that person starts to dislike us and when we genuinely appreciate people, they start to like us. Imagine when someone else can be this much affected by our words what effects our own thoughts might be having on us?

Don’t Be Your Own Enemy

Our subconscious mind is like a kid, but it is very powerful. All our behavior is controlled by our inner mind. What our likes and dislikes are, how we react under certain circumstances, our skills, our fears, etc. are all controlled by how our inner mind has been programmed.

Just like the programming codes that runs the software in a computer system, the deeply rooted beliefs that are resulted from various experiences of our childhood are what controls our actions. Of course, we have the free will to choose our actions consciously but our behavioral patterns are governed by the thick layers of beliefs that we have in our subconscious mind.

This is why we fail and struggle in various areas of our lives because we are working on the symptoms and not the cause. The easiest way to achieve your goals is to first work on your inner mind and clear the limiting beliefs which might otherwise hinder your thoughts, once we cleanse these trouble makers, only then can we make progress by making the right decisions. We should believe that our progress and efforts are going to take us to those desired goals that we have set.

Positive affirmations are one of the methods that can replace an old limiting belief in your subconscious mind with a new empowering belief. But you must know how to use them correctly, hence let us now dive a bit deeper into these details.

Using Affirmations the Right Way

You should not think much about whether you are using an affirmation correctly or not but there are a few things that you should keep in mind.

Don’t use affirmations when you are very unhappy.

Yes, you heard it right. People might be telling you that you should use positive affirmations when you are not feeling good. Using positive affirmations in order to motivate yourself is a good idea but you cannot fool yourself.

It makes no sense to say positive things when you are not in a joyful state of mind. When you are feeling very low, do something to bring yourself into a better state of mind before using the affirmations. (You can read my post “De-energize Agony” for the techniques to get into a better state when you are feeling low)

Your emotions are your guide.

The best way to know whether an affirmation is working or not is to observe how you feel while saying it. If the words bring blissful/motivating feelings to you then you are using the affirmation correctly otherwise you must consider changing it.

Don’t Fight with Your Thoughts

Another big mistake people often make is that they try to counter their negative thoughts by saying positive words. Fighting with your mind is worthless, it will always win. The more you resist negative thoughts, the more they persist.

So rather than wasting your time to forcefully make your mind to think in a certain way, what you should do is to engage yourself in some activity that will enable you to forget the problem. Once the intensity of the distressing thoughts is reduced you can then try to think constructively.

Don’t Use Affirmations to Forcefully Make Something Happen

In my post “4 Times When You Should Not Use the Law of Attraction Affirmations”, I have explained this point in detail. You should never try to use positive affirmation when you are in desperate need of something. Your expectations must be realistic. You can’t lose 20 pounds in one week (without hurting your body), so saying repeatedly “I will lose 20 pounds in a week” is as stupid as it sounds. But still many people make the mistake of trying to make such things happen by using unrealistic statements repeatedly.

Make It a Ritual

Just like you have a fixed routine based time for everything, make a habit to say your affirmations during a particular time of the day.

The best time to use uplifting words is when you wake up and before you go to bed, during these times your conscious mind is not much active like it is during the rest of the day so the suggestions you are sending to your subconscious mind are more effective since it does not have to cross the barrier created by your conscious mind.

So now you know well about the affirmations and you have also learned how them in the right way. Next, I will be showing you how you can formulate your own self-inspiring statements.

Formulating Your Own Affirmation

When you make your customized affirmation it not only gives you the freedom to personalize it but you also will be able to bring up the necessary emotions while saying them.

Here are the steps to make your own affirmations:-

1 – Set Your Goal Properly

Whatever your goal is, it should be realistic. I know they say that you should dream of big things, that is true but you should be careful that your goals should not seem unrealistic to you.

By realistic goals, I don’t mean you should aim for something that is already achievable to you, the very crux of using these methods is to push your limits.

Your goal should be a little higher than what you think is practically achievable to you right now and lower than what seems impractical to you.

This can be decided by you only.

2 – Use the Words That You Love

Words have the same meaning in the dictionary but to people, every word brings up different kinds of emotions. From an individualistic point of view, some words are powerful whereas some are not.

To some people, the word “Divine” feels powerful whereas to some people “Heavenly” might be more powerful. This entirely depends on you, choose the words that you like.

3 – Make It Short

Using long statements can kill the joy in the long term and it can lead to the loss of passion. So I always recommend my readers to keep their affirmations short and simple.

4 – Don’t Use Negation

Your subconscious mind cannot understand words like “No”, “Don’t”, “Can’t” etc. so you should avoid using any negation in the sentence.

For example, if you will use an affirmation such as “I don’t fear failure” what your inner mind will hear is “I fear failure”, even while saying such statements you can feel that negativity because your emotions are the language of your inner mind.

What you can do is to construct a sentence that aims at the same goal but does not use any negation, for the above example you can prefer statements like “I love success”, “Being successful is simple”, “I love the feeling of being successful” etc.

Now let’s formulate an affirmation.

Let’s suppose you want to lose weight. Here are a few statements, let’s evaluate them one by one:-

I am not fat anymore.. Can’t use this affirmation as there’s a negation in this one.

I feel slim and fit.. Can’t use this one also because it will be hard for a fat person to believe in it.

I am losing weight so quickly.. Again not a statement that will bring up good emotions because this also seems impossible.

Every day I am becoming healthier and fit. Now, this affirmation is something that will be effective.

I am getting closer to my ideal weight and I can feel it…Here’s another good one.

I hope you understand what I am trying to explain here. Whatever affirmation you formulate and whatever words you choose ultimately it should make you feel elated and you must be able to emotionally connect with your goal with the use of the statement that you are using.

All you need to do is to be consistent with the use of these affirmations and believe in your goals, once the limiting beliefs in your subconscious mind that stops you from achieving your dreams gets altered, success will be yours.
