Lucid Dreaming Supplements: What Nobody Told Me as a Beginner

Thinking about taking supplements to have a lucid dream? Did you hear about Galantamine, Choline, or Vitamin B6 to induce lucid dreams and want a green flag?

Been there, tried that. So you are at the right place to make that decision.

More than a decade ago, when I first became interested in lucid dreaming, I tried very hard to induce one. I read books, experimented with a plethora of methods, kept a dream journal, and stayed consistent with reality checks.

Eventually, frustration led me to a product that was quite popular among lucid dreamers at that time, a supplement that came with a red pill and a blue pill. It felt like something straight out of The Matrix.

The reason for my frustration was simple. I had discovered lucid dreaming, read everything I could about it, and even taught the concept to a friend. Then that friend had his first lucid dream before I did.

That’s probably every man’s biggest envy, right? You learn a skill, and a complete beginner succeeds before you.

So when I discovered a supplement that promised to help induce lucid dreams, it felt like I had finally found the missing piece. It felt like a shortcut. It felt like a secret that experienced lucid dreamers knew about while I was still struggling.

Anyway, I took the pills and, voila, I started having around three to four lucid dreams a week. I expected the lucid dreams to happen the very first night, but they actually started showing up after a couple of days. They were more frequent, more vivid, and much longer than the fleeting lucid dreams I had experienced before.

Looking back now, I can see countless lucid dreaming supplements built around those same ingredients, along with a few newer and probably more powerful options. Every year, more products seem to appear.

The interesting thing is that the supplements worked better than I expected in some ways. Yet after a while I stopped using them. Frequent awakenings, alarms in the middle of the night, an overactive mind, frustrating dreams, and feeling exhausted the next day eventually made me question whether the shortcut was really worth it.

In this article, I want to share what I learned from that experience, what lucid dreaming supplements can realistically do, what they can’t do, and why I think beginners should think carefully before relying on them.

Why Lucid Dreaming Supplements Are So Popular

Lucid dreaming supplements are popular for natural reasons. The frustration is very real, just like it was in my case. I have seen how difficult it gets for people when they are unable to induce their very first lucid dream. As I mentioned in my post about failing to induce a lucid dream, this can become extremely discouraging.

Even experienced lucid dreamers sometimes go through phases where lucid dreams suddenly stop appearing. This can happen for natural reasons. Sometimes your sleep cycle does not have very active REM phases, sometimes your dreams are not as vivid or memorable, and sometimes life simply gets in the way.

Whether you are a beginner trying to have your first lucid dream or an experienced dreamer going through a dry spell, failing to get results despite trying different methods can test your patience.

When you start losing patience, you become much more vulnerable to any new idea that promises results. Beginners are especially susceptible because they often want proof and evidence that lucid dreaming is real and achievable.

They want that one experience that strengthens their belief and motivates them to continue.

This is where lucid dreaming supplements become appealing. They promise more vivid dreams, better dream recall, or a greater chance of becoming lucid. For someone who has been trying for weeks or months without success, that can be very difficult to ignore.

The truth is that most people are not looking for a pill. They are looking for a solution. They want faster results with whatever they are already doing.

That was certainly true in my case. I wasn’t interested in supplements themselves. I simply wanted more lucid dreams.

The Most Common Lucid Dreaming Supplements

Person imagining vivid dreams while learning about lucid dreaming supplements.Well, there is a plethora of lucid dreaming supplements present in the market today that are often advocated by many lucid dreamers and marketers. However, a few of them stand out as the most common and most popular among lucid dreamers, and I will be talking about them specifically in this section.

I have never been so interested in using these supplements, but I do know their effects, and I have tried them once or a few times just to know about them. I have never depended on them.

Initially, as I talked about, I took that blue and red pill which was like the Matrix pills. Now, those pills specifically contained two compounds that I will be discussing below.

But for now, all you need to know is that these supplements come in a few kinds. There are the ones that focus on suppressing the initial REM phase so that there will be a kickback, allowing you to have vivid dreams in the later hours of your sleep cycle.

Then, there are the ones that are pharmacological in nature and are believed to influence the brain processes associated with dreaming and dream recall. Finally, there are the ones that promote or work on the particular areas of the brain that are associated with dreaming activity.

We will be discussing all of these one by one now.

Choline

Choline is one common compound that is often used by lucid dreamers. It is an essential nutrient that works as a building block for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays an important role in memory and REM sleep. By taking it, people often report experiencing more vivid dreams.

Melatonin

The next on the list is melatonin, which is a naturally occurring hormone in the body responsible for sleep cycle regulation.

Many lucid dreamers use melatonin because it may influence dream vividness and sleep patterns. Reports suggest that melatonin can help with dream vividness, but it does not guarantee becoming conscious in your dreams. Some users also report nightmares, grogginess, or disruption of their normal sleep patterns after prolonged use.

Mugwort

Mugwort is one of the ingredients that was present in the pill that I took earlier. It is a sort of herb that has been used in teas and traditional medicine in some cultures.

Basically, it is a compound that claims to help promote vivid dreaming experiences. Some users report more vivid dreams or unusual dream experiences, whereas others report highly chaotic dreams that are not necessarily enjoyable.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin involved in a variety of bodily functions, including the production of neurotransmitters.

Lucid dreamers have used Vitamin B6 for a very long time because it has been studied for dream recall and dream vividness. Many people report more vivid dreams, especially during the later hours of sleep.

Keep in mind that excessive Vitamin B6 intake can potentially lead to nerve-related problems, especially when taken in high amounts over long periods.

Galantamine

Of all the substances discussed in lucid dreaming communities, galantamine has the strongest scientific support.

Many lucid dreamers around the globe report having lucid dreams after taking it, especially when combined with the WBTB (Wake Back To Bed) method. It is actually a pharmaceutical drug, which is why I use the word substance rather than supplement.

Galantamine is commonly prescribed for Alzheimer’s disease. For lucid dreaming purposes, it works by affecting acetylcholine activity in the brain, which is believed to increase awareness during REM sleep.

However, unlike what many people assume, it does not guarantee a lucid dream. The probability of having one may become significantly higher for some people, but results still vary from person to person.

It also comes with greater risks than most of the other substances discussed here. The greater the effect, the greater the risk. This is one of the reasons why medical supervision is important whenever pharmaceutical substances are involved.

Most of these substances are commonly used alongside the WBTB method, where you wake up after a few hours of sleep, take the supplement, and then go back to sleep. Not all of them are used this way, but galantamine is particularly associated with that approach.

Now, some of these supplements come with warnings, limitations, and potential side effects. I am not advocating the use of any of them, nor am I suggesting that they are safe simply because they are popular. My goal here is only to provide information and share my observations.

Whether these supplements are actually worth using is a completely different question, which brings us to the next section.

Do These Lucid Dreaming Supplements Actually Work?

The truth that I am somewhat hesitant to accept is that some of these supplements do have effects, and some of them do work. Otherwise, so many people around the globe would not be reporting their experiences with them.

You can find countless lucid dreamers discussing substances like galantamine on Reddit and other communities, claiming that they helped them induce lucid dreams. So yes, there is certainly some truth behind those claims.

The red and blue Matrix-style pills that I talked about earlier contained mugwort and choline. I had to take them on alternate nights, and my experience was that after about two or three days, I started having more vivid dreams and more lucid dreams. So personally, I can say that some of these supplements do work because I experienced the effects myself.

I cannot speak with the same level of confidence about galantamine, Vitamin B6, or melatonin because I have never used them extensively for lucid dreaming. I have tried melatonin before, but I did not notice any significant effect on my lucid dreaming experiences.

What you have to understand, however, is that none of these are magic pills. They are not a quick-fix formula. Some may increase dream vividness, dream recall, or the chances of becoming lucid, but they do not replace the actual practices involved in lucid dreaming.

In most cases, lucid dreamers still combine these substances with proven lucid dreaming techniques such as dream journaling, reality checks, meditation, or the Wake Back To Bed method. The supplements and the techniques usually go hand in hand.

The main takeaway is simple: even if a supplement works, it does not mean you can skip the practice. The knowledge, awareness, and experience gained from consistent lucid dreaming practice are things that no pill can provide. At best, a supplement may help create an opportunity. What you do with that opportunity still depends on you.

With all this in mind, now let me help you with your final decision on what to do.

My Opinion, Your Decision

Now, I have talked to you extensively about the effectiveness of these supplements. I have explained what my experiences with them have been, and I have also individually discussed the most common lucid dreaming supplements.

Now, this is the section where I will tell you my honest take on these supplements and leave the decision up to you. Of course, this is in no way medical advice, and I would strongly advise you to maintain caution and consult a doctor before taking any substance for this purpose if you decide to go down that path.

My experience with them, as you know, was that I did start having lucid dreams, but soon I started having a lot of sleep disturbances and my proper sleep cycle got disrupted. So, my experience after those initial lucid dreams was not particularly positive. I am actually thankful that I understood very early that this could become a dependency, disrupt my sleep cycles, and cause me to lose my peace of mind.

My opinion about these supplements has changed over time. In the beginning days of my lucid dreaming journey, I became totally against them. I even started advising readers through comments and emails that they should never use them.

But later in my life, when I became more experienced with lucid dreaming, my view became a little more nuanced. I have occasionally used some of these supplements to break long periods where lucid dreams simply stopped happening. Of course, I have never taken them consistently, especially when they were stronger in nature or came with significant side effects.

Even today, I still advise people not to rely on pills or supplements for lucid dreaming because I know from personal experience that practice can take you much further. Lucid dreaming is a skill, and like any skill, it improves with consistency. Nothing I have tried comes close to the long-term benefits of proper practice and the correct use of techniques.

Simple habits such as maintaining a dream journal and performing regular reality checks can dramatically increase your chances of having lucid dreams. They may not produce instant results, but they build something much more valuable: the ability to lucid dream without depending on anything external.

At the same time, I also understand how frustrating this journey can be when nothing seems to work. Looking back, that is probably the only situation where I understand why someone might choose to experiment with a supplement once or twice.

If it helps them have their first lucid dream, it can provide confidence and prove that the experience is possible. However, that does not remove the need for caution, proper medical advice, or an understanding of the potential risks involved.

So no, I am not as strongly against these supplements as I once was. But I still believe the better path is to learn lucid dreaming naturally and develop the skill for yourself. Ultimately, the decision is yours. You can choose the shortcut, or you can choose the longer road of practice and patience. Personally, I believe the second path is far more rewarding.
